Age of Arthur Campaign

A new campaign for WAB players using the recently published Age of Arthur supplement.

Campaign Rules

  1. The campaign takes place in 5th and 6th Century Britain. Towards the end of the period of Arthur and the Anglo-Saxon wars and the period known as the Age of Tyrants. Suitably confused historically to allow a range of armies to ravage the land. They would include the remnants of the Romano-British Civitates led by a number of competing warlords; surrounded and often allied with the British and Welsh kingdoms, early Saxons, Franks, Picts and Scots-Irish.
  2. The campaign rules are broadly those set out in the campaigns section of the Age of Arthur (AoA) supplement (p128-130).
  3. The wargame rules used will be the Current version of Warhammer Ancient Battles, together with the current Clarifications & Rules issued by Warhammer Historical Wargames and specifically those devised for the AoA supplement.
  4. Each player will indicate to the umpire their choice of army and will be allocated a kingdom or territory. Armies will generally be 1500pts but the list may be varied by the player for each battle or altered by the scenario. In addition each player must submit to the Umpire their personal Retinue of seven characters (max 700pts including 2 allies) that cannot be changed (see AoA p129). Characters earn glory points and units can gain veteran status (AoA p130).
  5. The campaign will follow a similar format to “The Raiding Season” (AoA p133).  The attacker decides which neighbour he wishes to raid and notifies the Umpire. However, the defender is forewarned and has sent troops to block a vital river crossing. Play Scenario 3. If the attacker achieves a Mighty or Close Run victory he has crossed the river. Anything else and he is repulsed and skulks off home to much derision from the Bards! The Bards Chronicles will report all this with varying degrees of accuracy!
  6. If the attacker is successful Game 2 will be a selected scenario by the Umpire from AoA with appropriate penalties. If the attacker again achieves a Mighty or Close Run victory then Game 3 will be the decisive battle again with a suitable scenario.
  7. The aim is to create between one and three games between any two players. Once a campaign is over players are free to attack another kingdom or territory. Natural disasters and religious or other intervention may occur if too many attacks are made on the same territory.
  8. Army lists for each battle must be submitted to the Umpire although they won’t be checked in advance. Units may not be larger than 50 figures.
  9. Table size is 8' x 4' unless the scenario states otherwise. Terrain rules will be as described in each scenario and the default will be as set out in the WAB rulebook (p83/84). Terrain pieces should be between 8” and 12” across. A player must place at least two terrain pieces before declaring satisfaction. Secret deployment will apply using screens.
