The Iain Forrest Memorial Trophy is awarded to the winner of the annual 28mm ancients and medieval competition.
This used to be played using Warhammer Ancient Battles rules and then SAGA. However this year it will be played using the Lion Rampant ruleset.
Lion Rampant Competition GDWS 2016/17
The idea is for quick and cheerful, so playing more games in a session should be much less structured than FOG. The 1 ½ hour rule should never come up but then…
No boasts are being used.
Scenario 1: Bloodbath is being used exclusively
There are 4 potential types of result: Straight win, winning draw, draw, and losing draw.
Points to note
GDWS – SAGA Challenge
Introduction
This year’s Iain Forrest Memorial Trophy will be played using the SAGA rule set. The Crescent and the Cross book has the latest rule clarifications, but you can get by if you only have the dark ages rule book.
Army Rosters
Army lists should be created using a 6pt roster. You can select an army from all the books i.e. the dark ages books and Crescent and the Cross. Skraelings are permitted but not the Steppe Tribes. Rosters should be declared at the start of each game, but you can change your army if you want each round.
You must have the appropriately armed model in order to use it – if a model is supposed to be mounted then he/she needs to be on a horse!
Heroes, Swords for Hire, and Priests can be utilised, but please make sure you have a copy of their relevant rules handy on the day for both you and your opponents benefit.
Format
The format is the usual Swiss match up system with a random first round.
There will be three rounds and each round will be played to a fixed scenario, adapted from those in the books.
Scoring
Victory Points are awarded for each game with 5 points for a win, 3 for a draw and 1 point for a loss.
There will be a fixed date for the completion of each round. If not played by that date then each player will be awarded one point.
If you haven’t got an army, I’m happy to lend one (not all from the Balkans!) and can provide any army list you want.
If you want to enter please let me know by 19 October club meeting.

Lion Rampant Competition GDWS 2016/17
The idea is for quick and cheerful, so playing more games in a session should be much less structured than FOG. The 1 ½ hour rule should never come up but then…
- You play your opponent twice in a round, both scores count. Each game can be on different diced for tables or the same table if both opponents are happy with that.
- The games will be played on a 6’ x 4’ table; the terrain will be from one of 6 pre-planned tables. There will be no further dicing to remove or alter terrain on the map.
- When both players dice for the attacker the winner will then roll a D6 to select the table. Where the attacker dice is a draw then the person with the most Bidowers and/or Mounted Yeomen Units will be the attacker. (Confirmed on the LR blog/forum this week).
- Each game should last no longer than 1 ½ hours from placement of the last unit. Should this time be exceeded then the winning positon is determined as below. No new turn can start within 5 minutes of the 1 ½ hours.
- Army lists are as per the ‘historical’ sample lists in the main rules. Same list to be used in all games for the duration of that particular round of competition.(Just in case you picked a turkey!)
- Participants to notify me by email of army being used by next club meeting. A draw will then be done and ‘first round’ games completed by end of May (although this limit can be flexible if ‘life’ happens, the delay cannot be later than the first club meeting in June.)
- Uncompleted games are granted losing draw points TO BOTH PARTIES.
- The 2nd Round will be same as FOG competitions based on highest players being matched off and not playing same opponent twice over differing rounds.
- Games can be played at any suitable venue to reduce the potential for delay.
- Results to be emailed to me ASAP please, pretty please
No boasts are being used.
Scenario 1: Bloodbath is being used exclusively
There are 4 potential types of result: Straight win, winning draw, draw, and losing draw.
- Win: All enemy units have left the table and remaining player has at least 1 unit on the table. 5 points for league table.
- Winning draw: one player has destroyed more enemy unit points than received. Battered enemy units count ½ points rounding up fractions (Battered friendly units will be counted by opponent at same tariff) 3 points for league table.
- Draw: Where both players have the exact same result in lost unit points. 2.5 points for league table.
- Losing Draw: Lost more unit points than opponent. 2 points for league table.
Points to note
- As per main rules when there is a total of 5 or less units left on table, if the required score on the die roll indicates that this will be the last turn, NOT sudden death, as we have been wont to play.
- Units forced back in combat DO use the restricted movement rules for terrain but still must end 3” from all other units or take a ‘courage’ test for potential losses (this will affect foot yeomen/Bidowers and all mounted).
- When your leader is killed due to Lucky Blow he is one of the casualties of the combat, NOT an additional casualty (so 1 casualty figure is the leader and one other model if the combat result was two casualties, not 2 + leader).
- Measurement of distances between units. If movement trays are used (optional) then you measure from the edge of the movement tray and not the figure. This will have the effect of enlarging the unit footprint so the choice is up to the player to use trays or not.
- Units with the Evade rule can choose to evade and suffer the consequences of failure. The rules say they MAY test, not MUST test. Therefore evading is NOT automatic (seems strange that units in favourable defensive terrain would automatically run out of it). Units that choose to stand do not count as caught evaders and therefore do not have reduced armour stats, this has no impact on defence stats as most skirmishers defend on 6 anyway (but mounted yeomen’s armour would not drop to 1).
- Courage Tests: Where a retinue has to take a Courage Test for multiple events (Dead Leader/half the army points/last unit) only ONE test is taken with the appropriate modifiers. So a unit with 2 casualties, just dead Leader and half the army all at once will have minus 2 (casualties), minus 1 (half army) and throw one courage test. Life’s a bugger when you read the rules twice.
